๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡บ Tax Return 2026: A Student's Survival Guide

Hey there ๐Ÿ‘‹

The Australian financial year ends on 30 June 2026, and tax season officially opens on 1 July 2026. For most international students, this is one of the most important โ€” and most misunderstood โ€” parts of living in Australia.

Done right, you could get a refund of hundreds or even thousands of dollars.
Done wrong, you could face penalties, audits, or visa headaches.

So this week, we're breaking it all down โ€” the dos, the don'ts, and the must-know basics.

๐Ÿง  First, the basics

  • Financial year: 1 July 2025 โ†’ 30 June 2026

  • Lodgement opens: 1 July 2026

  • Deadline (self-lodging): 31 October 2026

  • Deadline (via registered tax agent): typically later, but you must be registered with them before 31 October

  • Most international students are "Australian residents for tax purposes" if they're here for more than 6 months on a course โ€” this is good news, because it usually means a lower tax rate and access to the tax-free threshold ($18,200).

โœ… The DOs

  1. Get a Tax File Number (TFN) before you start working.
Without it, your employer taxes you at the highest rate (47%).
โ†’ Apply free on the ATO website

  2. Link your myGov account to the ATO.
This is how you lodge online for free.
    โ†’ my.gov.au

  3. Lodge your return between July and October.
Income statements from your employer are usually marked "Tax ready" by mid-July.

  4. Claim work-related deductions you're entitled to, such as:

    • Uniforms and laundry (if required for work)

    • Self-education expenses directly related to your current job

    • Tools and equipment used for work

    • Phone/internet โ€” work-use portion only

    • Union or professional fees
โ†’ ATO โ€“ Deductions you can claim

  5. Keep your receipts and records for 5 years.
Use the ATO myDeductions app โ€” it's free and saves headaches.

  6. Declare ALL your income, including:

    • Wages from every job

    • Tips

    • Uber, DoorDash, Amazon Flex (gig work counts)

    • Bank interest

    • Any income earned overseas while you're a resident for tax purposes

  7. If unsure, use a registered tax agent.
Always check they're listed on the Tax Practitioners Board before paying anyone.

โŒ The DON'Ts

  1. Don't ignore tax time.
Even if you earned under $18,200 and don't owe tax, you usually still need to lodge a non-lodgement advice so the ATO doesn't chase you.

  2. Don't claim deductions you can't prove.
The ATO data-matches with banks, employers, ride-share platforms and universities. Fake claims = audits + penalties.

  3. Don't claim self-education expenses for your main course of study
(e.g., your university tuition is generally not deductible if it's the qualification you came here for).

  4. Don't fall for "guaranteed refund" scams.
Real tax agents never promise a refund amount before seeing your data.

  5. Don't share your TFN, myGov password or bank login.
The ATO will never call/SMS asking for these.
    โ†’ Verify scams here

  6. Don't forget your HELP/HECS or study loans if you had them in your home country โ€” they generally don't apply, but any Australian study loan repayment thresholds do.

  7. Don't leave the country without lodging.
If you're finishing your studies and going home, lodge an early tax return for residents leaving Australia before you fly out.

๐ŸŽ“ Special notes for students

  • Working under 20 hours/week during semester (or unlimited during breaks) is still subject to tax โ€” declare everything.

  • Internships: paid = taxable. Unpaid = no return needed for that part.

  • Scholarships: usually tax-free if you're a full-time student and it's for your education โ€” but some are taxable. Check yours.

  • If you're on a 485 Graduate visa, you're treated the same as any resident worker.

๐Ÿ“… Mark your calendar

  • 30 June 2026 โ†’ Financial year ends

  • 1 July 2026 โ†’ Tax return season opens

  • Mid-July โ†’ Most income statements marked Tax ready

  • 31 October 2026 โ†’ Self-lodge deadline

๐Ÿ’Œ Coming up next week

We'll break down the best free tools to lodge your return, compare myTax vs. tax agents, and share a step-by-step walkthrough of lodging through myGov.
